How to Look: Prints and Drawings

While paintings and sculptures tend to capture a greater share of attention due to their larger formats and physical presence, works on paper have long been a major focus for artists. Indeed, the intimate scale and portability of drawings, watercolors, and prints have meant that they offer distinctive opportunities for creative experimentation.

This course will be offered in the Whitney’s new Sondra Gilman Study Center, which is devoted to the study of works on paper. Participants will have the opportunity to view special materials from the Museum’s collection by artists including Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Andy Warhol, and to gain unique insight into the role of works on paper in these artists’ careers.

Instructor: Michael Lobel is a professor of art history at Hunter College, and has taught and lectured on art at colleges, universities, and museums for two decades. His writings include three books, numerous exhibition catalog essays, and articles for such publications as Artforum, Art in America, and Art Bulletin.
