k k k A message about charitable giving from Chuck Close

Dear Friend,

If there is one museum that artists call home, it's the Whitney Museum of American Art—the only museum that champions American artists at every stage of their careers.

Since its inception, the Whitney has supported our country's greatest artists during their early years—Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Louise Bourgeois, Jasper Johns, and Cindy Sherman, to name a few. Nothing in my career has meant more to me than my first inclusion in the Whitney Biennial more than forty years ago. Words cannot express the excitement I felt as a young, emerging artist having my first museum exposure, or the thrill of having my work hang on the wall next to those of my heroes, as well as my contemporaries.

As a Whitney Trustee, I ask you today to join me in supporting the Whitney's mission to create opportunities for groundbreaking new works, while preserving and interpreting our cultural heritage for generations to come.

To sustain and maximize our ability to present revolutionary American artists and media, we need your support. Your tax-deductible gifts will be applied directly to the Whitney's programs and will help ensure that we continue to bring the artistic achievements of twentieth- and twenty-first-century American art to the widest possible audience.

For viewers from around the world, the Whitney is increasingly seen as an essential destination—a place from which to assess American artistic innovations and accomplishments. For the American artist, it is the place we've always called home.

Sincerely,

k

Chuck Close
