Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time

Apr 23, 2013

This video was produced as an exhibition preview for Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time, presented at the Whitney Museum October 28, 2010 through April 10, 2011. Edward Hopper's use of the subject matter of modern life to portray universal human experiences made him America's most iconic realist painter of the early twentieth century. Drawn primarily from the Whitney's extensive holdings, the exhibition placed Hopper's achievements in the context of his contemporaries, including such artists as John Sloan, Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Sheeler, Paul Strand, Charles Demuth, Guy Pène du Bois, and others.
