Insider Focus: Demystifying Painting

Mon, Dec 11, 2017
7–8:30 pm

Floor Three, Susan and John Hess Family Theater

Insider Series Members in the Curate Your Own Program

During this talk, artist and educator Mark Joshua Epstein will answer the question, “What is a painting?” by breaking down the medium’s material components—support (oftentimes stretched canvas), pigment, and binding medium—and by describing some of the techniques artists use to manipulate these components. Works from the Whitney’s collection and the Laura Owens mid-career survey will serve as case studies. An optional demonstration and hands-on workshop will take place after the talk.

Mark Joshua Epstein (b. 1979) is a visual artist and independent curator based in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Vane Gallery in Newcastle, England and Biquini Wax in Mexico City. Epstein has participated in numerous residency programs including the Millay Colony, the Macdowell Colony, and the Saltonstall Foundation.

Individual and Dual Insiders Series members are invited to this event. For Individual members, the invitation is for one; for Dual members, the invitation is for two. Registration instructions will be provided by email.
