Reception and Talk: Warhol’s Legacy Today

In this talk Aliza Shvarts, one of the Whitney’s Joan Tisch Teaching Fellows, will address the legacy of Andy Warhol in the current moment of Instagram celebrity and Twitter politics. The upcoming retrospective Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again (opening November 12) surveys the entirety of the artist’s 40-plus years of output, inviting us to consider Warhol’s career as a unified continuum.
From the commercial illustrations of the 1950s to the iconic Pop silkscreens of the 1960s, and experimental paintings of the 1980s, his work underscored the constructed nature of images. By exploring a handful of case studies from each period of Warhol’s career, this lecture will ultimately address how his aesthetic innovations might allow us to engage with current modes of representation in art, politics, and society more broadly. A wine reception will be available throughout the event.
Aliza Shvarts is a PhD candidate in Performance Studies at New York University. As an artist, writer, and scholar, her work deals broadly with feminist understandings of reproductive labor and temporality. Recent and upcoming exhibitions of her work include Off Scene, a solo exhibition at Artspace (New Haven, CT); A new job to unwork at at Participant Inc (New York, NY); and ANTI, the 6th Athens Biennale.
